Lolita’s Personality

Despite their adoring nature, these birds are very loud and can be a distraction for those living near. They can make ear-shattering screeches and loud calls which can be a nuisance to those who live in apartments or condos.
Another intriguing characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, which means that males and females are hard to distinguish. Because of this, the only way to determine sex is through DNA testing. Once the birds' sex is determined and breeding can begin, breeding can commence.
Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to learn commands and phrases. Lolita's Care
Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to cease performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also would like her to be relocated to an open-water pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the returning of orca Keiko into the wild, conservationists were hopeful that Lolita would have a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to return to sea.
The people who are Lolita's captors – the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. In addition, they keep her in a tiny tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her an ancestor, on a plan to eventually move her to open waters. The plan would have included a sanctuary in Washington's west coast, in which she could reside for the remainder of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of time larger than her Miami home and be surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.
If the plan was implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild, killers whales are social animals who are close to their family members until they die. Lolita who has been alone at Seaquarium in a secluded area for over 40 years, is being released into the wild. Activists across the country including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have demanded her departure from Seaquarium's stage and her eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet
Like any species of animal in captivity, a captive blue and gold macaw's health is dependent on a balanced diet. These beautiful birds require premium food and lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. A macaw that is well-fed in captivity can live up to 60 years. This magnificent bird also requires plenty of space to fly and exercise.

Lolita's Health
While her beauty is unquestionable Lolita's health continues get worse. Animal welfare groups have expressed concerns about her and would like to see that she is returned to the wild. Lolita is a resident of the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and has been a tourist attraction for decades. She has battled chronic illnesses and a crippling illness that has left her in a vulnerable state.
The Miami Seaquarium, now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not shared information on Lolita's current health. However, the non-profit organization Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates about her health and well-being on their website. These show that she is aging quickly and that her health is deteriorating.
It is not clear what health issues are affecting the orca, since her captor isn't obliged to disclose this information. However, a database of necropsies from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a major factor in the death of orcas kept in captivity.
Despite the ongoing health issues there is a lot of hope that Lolita may be closer to living in the wild than ever before. The new owner of the Seaquarium has made a pledge to moving the whale out of her tank and into her natural habitat in the Pacific.
The decision comes after years of public pressure as well as from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea in which she can swim in the ocean and even reunite with the orca believed to be her mother. The plans were not enough to save the beloved whale, which passed away on Friday due to what was thought to be a kidney issue.
